Modern designs inspired by Bauhaus .....

 Modern Bauhaus-inspired piece of furniture:

THECOOLIST*, (2013), Zetel Furniture by Muller and Van Severen [ONLINE].
[Accessed 19 November 13]

The designers of this modern Zetel Furniture, Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen (seen in the above picture), were inspired by Bauhaus.  The furniture consists of:
  • a frame made up of thin red metal bars
  • comfortable seats (a lounge chair connected to a normal sitting chair) made out of fine leather
  • a long curvilinear floor lamp between the two seats (serving as a divider).
The design is simple, modern, pleasing and functional.

The Bau-Bike ….. A homage to Bauhaus design:

Bau Bike: inspired by Bauhaus design ! in bike friends with Metal Bike
[Accessed 19 November 13]

The design of the above bicycle was inspired by Bauhaus as well.  It was constructed using straight lines, raw material and geometric forms (mostly squares and equilateral triangles).

The above web design conforms with the Bauhaus style -
  • simplicity and clarity in the page header (showing just ID instead of Identity Designed) and in the menu bar - that make it user-friendly
  • the use of sans-serif font which is not fussy, yet beautiful
  • colour is used to the minimum - just to distinguish links and not for decoration

Food Designs inspired by Bauhaus ....

The following series of photos were taken by the photographers Nicky & Max, who are based in Berlin.  The geometric forms, typical of the Bauhaus style, stand out in these modern food designs:

The Naef Bauhaus Chess Set:

Elite Choice, (2013), Smart And Minimalistic: The Naef Bauhaus Chess Set [ONLINE].
[Accessed 19 November 13]

The above chess set, which was originally designed in 1923 by sculptor Josef Hartwig, is a very beautiful piece of artwork which clearly shows the combination of fine arts with craftsmanship - something that Walter Gropius, the founder of Bauhaus, always believed in and always passed on to his students.

This chess set shows good geometric lines and every piece was designed to reveal the way that it should move:

  • The knights have an "L" shape
  • The bishops have diagonals intersecting at the top
  • The queen has a spherical shape on the top - that means that she can be moved anywhere on the board
  • The pawns are simple cubical shapes - that means that they cannot be moved much
  • The castles are larger cuboids
  • The king has the same shape as the castle with a pawn on top

This dress is made up of nearly 14,235 rubber bands.  It was designed by Margarita Mileva, an architect from New York City.  Mileva recycled and transformed the rubber bands into a very fashionable outfit.  She was influenced by Paul Klee, one of the pioneers of Bauhaus.
